The Clark Atlanta University softball team makes an out-of-conference visit to Emmanuel College today, facing the Lady Lions in a doubleheader in Franklin Springs, Ga. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The Lady Panthers are coming off of being swept by Albany State last weekend in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series for CAU. Two of those games could have easily been Clark Atlanta wins. CAU lost one game to ASU after leading for six innings, but giving up six runs in the final stanza. And in the series final game, the Lady Panthers lost 2-1 after being unable to convert a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh inning of that game.
Today, CAU takes on an Emmanuel team that is 15-21 overall and winners of three of their last five games. Emmanuel defeated Brevard 6-0 and 8-1 last weekend. They are led by freshman Isabelle Petty, who leads the team with 40 hits and is batting .351 this season, and Becky Collins, who is also batting .351 and has 34 hits.
The Lady Panthers continue to be paced by preseason All-SIAC utility player Tatijaanna Kelly. Kelly is batting .354 with 23 hits, ten of them doubles, and two home runs.
Jacey Gray is second on the team in hits with 16 and is batting .333.
Ajada Cofield has led the Lady Panthers on the mound, with a 4.20 ERA, while striking out 36 hitters in 74.1 innings this season. In 57.1 innings pitching this season,
Shalonda Woods has struck out 22.
After today's doubleheader, CAU goes back into SIAC play this weekend when they visit Claflin Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Panthers are then back at Lady Panthers Field on Wed. April 18 when they host Emmanuel for a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m.
