Clark Atlanta Falls To Claflin 85-80

Box Score Shelvick Henry Jr. scored 25 and Akil Douglas added 20, but it wasn't enough as Clark Atlanta University's 15-game winning streak ended with a tough 85-80 loss at Claflin Monday.

Despite the loss, Clark Atlanta is 20-2 this season and will battle for the chance to regain first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's East Division when they host Atlanta University Center rival Morehouse in a huge game on Thursday, Feb. 5.  CAU is 14-1 in the SIAC while Morehouse is 15-1.

Claflin splits the regular season series with CAU and goes to 19-5 this season. But they are still behind Morehouse and Clark Atlanta in third place in the SIAC with a 12-4 record.

"I give Claflin credit," said CAU Head Coach Darrell Walker. "They played well. We didn't quite play well. We got eight assists for the entire game, so you know we weren't playing right. We were 23-of-34 from the foul line. We got out-rebounded 45-28.  You give up 16 offensive rebounds it's going to be hard to win. A team shoots 54 percent against us, it's going to be hard to win."
CAU jumped on Claflin early, leading by 14 points twelve minutes into the game after Douglas' layup made gave Clark Atlanta an early 27-13 lead.   But Claflin went on a 23-8 run the rest of half to take a 36-35 lead into the break.  CAU went just over five minutes without a field goal to allow Claflin back into the game.

The lead see-sawed early in the second half, with both teams tied at 44-44 with 16:36 remaining.  Then Claflin went on another big run – this time a 17-5 run over the next five minutes – that put them up 61-49 with 11:44 left.

CAU then went on a big run of their own, this time outscoring Claflin 20-8 to tie the game at 69-69 after Henry's 3-pointer with 5:26 left in the game.  After a Claflin basket, Mark Burton Jr. hit a 3-pointer that gave CAU a 72-71 lead with 4:05 left.

But that would be CAU's final lead of the game.

Jordan Jones hit a 3-pointer for Claflin, and after a Jamal Pollydore turnover, Tyler Thompson hit a layup to put Claflin up by four points at 76-72 with 3:27 left.

Claflin's lead grew to seven points, which proved to be too much for CAU to overcome even after Henry's 3-pointer with 20 seconds left made it 84-80.

Henry finished with 25 points, four rebounds and an assist, while Douglas had 20 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.  Burton had 15 points, hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers.

"There was some back-and-forth.  They got out to a good little run, but we came back and tied it up, but just couldn't close the deal on the road.  Great environment.  But look, we're sitting here 20-2 and just have to regroup and get ready for Thursday."
