It's the Battle of the Atlanta University Center, Part II.
But Thursday's game at Morehouse (23-1), when the Clark Atlanta University Panthers (22-3) visit the Maroon Tigers in the final game of the regular season, a share of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division title is on the line.
The first game between the two, two weeks ago at CAU's L.S. Epps Gymnasium before a capacity crowd, featured the first matchup between the two, long-time rivals being nationally ranked at the same time.
CAU fell just short, 97-96, in a three-overtime thriller that could have gone either way.
Heading into Thursday's game, both teams are still ranked among the nation's best, Morehouse 9
th in the country while Clark Atlanta is ranked No. 20. Morehouse is first in the East Division with a 17-1 conference record, 10-1 within the division, while Clark Atlanta is 16-2 in the SIAC and 9-2 in the East Division.
A win for Clark Atlanta gives the Panthers a share of the East Division crown heading into next week's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. Based on the conference's tie-breaking procedures, if CAU defeats Morehouse and both teams are tied for the East Division title, Morehouse would get the East's No. 1 seed, based on overall winning percentage. CAU will be the No. 2 seed.
Morehouse is led by the SIAC's leading scorer, Tyrius Walker who is averaging 23.5 points per game for a team that leads the conference in scoring at 81.2 ppg.
But Clark Atlanta is the SIAC's only team that is ranked among the Top 4 in scoring offense (2
nd - 81.6 ppg) and scoring defense (4
th – 70.6 ppg).
Akil Douglas leads the Panthers in scoring (13.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.9), while
Anthony Williams is second in the SIAC in assists and 7
th in steals.
Shelvick Henry Jr. is one of the conference's top 3-point shooters, along with
Jamal Pollydore.
Damien Davis has also been one of the SIAC's most consistent rebounders.
Thursday's game at Morehouse's Franklin Forbes Arena tips off at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 with tickets going on sale at the Arena at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live at
