It's a big night for the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers as they take on Albany State University at 6 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium tonight.
Four seniors –
Lauren Turner,
Marissa Mandeldove,
Danielle Veney, and
Kiyanna Johnson – will be playing their final home games as Lady Panthers during Senior Night.
Turner and Mandeldove – both preseason All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team members, with Turner being the preseason SIAC Defensive Player of the Year – Johnson, who has started eight games and been a valuable reserve off the bench this season, and Veney, who has been injured most of the season but been a steadying influence for the entire team, will be honored tonight.
"I am very proud," said CAU Head Coach
Yolanda Moore. "It's not easy to come in and have a new coach after you've been here to come in and completely disrupt everything you've been accustomed to doing as a player, systematically and with the program. For them to have let go of what they thought it should be and to buy into what we wanted to do this year, all of them have done work within themselves.
"They've grown as young women, they've grown as players, they've grown as leaders," Moore said. "From the beginning of the season until now, I see the growth in them as leaders and I'm so proud of them. It's not easy for a coach going to a new team and it's not easy for a team that's already been together for a few years and have already been doing things a certain way to adjust to a new coach so quickly and be successful."
The Lady Panthers, who finished last in the SIAC East Division last season, wrapped up the East Division title with a 15-2 conference record, 17-7 overall. CAU has won eight games in a row, but their last loss was on the road at Albany State when the Lady Golden Rams defeated CAU 71-55.
"Albany State beat us pretty good when we were there, so of course we're incoming into the game with that," Moore said. "We just have to stay focused, do what we do well. They rebound the ball well – they outrebounded us that last game and we didn't shoot the ball well. So it's going to take us really focusing on making sure that we take care of the basketball, making sure that we block out and do all the things fundamentally that have helped us be in this position."
