Box Score The Clark Atlanta University Panthers were ahead of Kentucky State University most of the day Sunday, but KSU scored five runs in the ninth inning to take an 8-6 win at Bill Evans Field.
CAU (3-6 overall) was successful in the first weekend home stand of the season by taking two-of-three games from the Thorobreds.
Sunday, the Panthers got ahead early when
Jamari Randle and
Calvin Butler scored after KSU infield errors in the first inning.
Arias Smith scored in the second as
Ceontae Brandon stole second and Smith came in from from third on the throw to give CAU a 3-0 lead.
By the eighth, KSU was able to pull within one at 4-3. But in the bottom of the inning,
Anthony Nettles scored on
Ayrton Gijsbertha's sacrifice fly and
Calvin Butler scored on a wild pitch to go up 6-3.
In the top of the ninth, Dom Lawson hit a three-run homer to tie the game at 6-6. Elijah Collins then singled in a run, and then Bryan Wilson scored on a sacrifice bunt to put KSU up 8-6.
CAU started to rally in the bottom of the ninth as
Jordan Johnson was hit by a pitch and Nettles walked. Johnson eventually stole third, but Nettles was tagged out trying to swipe second.
Shahir Gates pitched eight innings for CAU, striking out eight but picked up the loss.
Calvin Butler singled and scored twice for the Panthers.
Next up for the Panthers is a 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 visit to Shorter University in Rome, Ga. They return to Atlanta for a doubleheader with Voorhees College Saturday, Feb. 24 starting at 1 p.m.
