Box Score Naomi Holloway scored 22 points and finished just two assists short of a triple-double as the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers won their eighth game in a row, defeating Fort Valley State University 83-65 Saturday.
The Lady Panthers are now 17-7 this season, 15-2 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and can claim the SIAC East Division regular season title with a win over Albany State Monday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
CAU dominated early, quickly running out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and stretching it out to 20 points after
Reyana Miller's jumper made it 37-17 with 2:58 remaining before halftime. But by the third quarter, Fort Valley State cut the lead to single-digits, getting it down to four points at 52-48 with less than a minute left in the period in a game that got chippy.
But two
Lauren Turner baskets immediately followed, igniting a 24-11 CAU run over the next eight minutes that put the game out of reach.
Holloway finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and two steals for CAU. Turner also had a double-double, with 18 points and ten rebounds.
Kiyanna Johnson had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while both Miller finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
I'nayah Moore and Riann McCullom both had even points while
Courtney Hall finished with six points, seven rebounds, three blocks and a steal.
Keaundra Cox led Fort Valley State with 15 points.
"I'm happy that we won," said CAU Head Coach
Yolanda Moore. "It wasn't pretty. We got out to a really good start. Very strong. We were able to turn them over, get some really easy baskets, get some steals. But once we built a lead, we weren't able to capitalize on it. We started turning the ball over, being really lazy and not executing on offense and it allowed them to get back into the game. We were up 20 and they ended up getting back to within four.
"But in the last quarter, I'm proud of how they maintained their composure and they were able to finish the game," she said.
