Panthers Open With a Win and Two Close Losses In Season Opening Peachtree City Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Clark Atlanta University Panthers opened their season in the Peachtree City Classic with a win and two close losses in Peachtree City, Ga.

CAU opened the season with an 18-14 loss to Fairmont State in a game where the Panthers led most of the game behind the hitting of Calvin Butler, Jamari Randle, Arias Smith and Ayrton Gijsbertha. But FSU eaked out five runs in the final two innings for a comeback win.

In their second game, Raphael Andrades' fourth inning, grand slam home run pulled CAU to within three, 8-5, against Eastern New Mexico. But ENMU scored seven runs over the next three innings to win 15-7.

Jordan Johnson pitched seven strong innings in the third game, a rematch with Fairmont State, giving up only two earned runs and struck out four.  But FSU's Luke Paull held CAU at bay with a three-hit shutout to lead them to a 3-0 win.  Two of CAU's three hits came from Shahir Gates, who also walked once.

Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Tuskegee was the final competition in the tournament for Clark Atlanta.  Andrades homered while Butler had two doubles, with Jason Howell and Anthony Nettles collecting two hits while Gijsbertha added three. Butler also struck out eight in helping pitch CAU to the 8-5 win over the Golden Tigers.

Next up for Clark Atlanta is a doubleheader at Point University on Tuesday, Feb. 13 beginning at 3 p.m.  The first home game for the Panthers will be Saturday, Feb. 17 when they host Kentucky State for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., and a single-game on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.  Both games take place at Bill Evans Field located at 3636 College Street, College Park, Ga.
