CAU Falls Late to Miles 56-53

Clark Atlanta's three seniors – Jalen Mitchell, Austin Donaldson and Shelvick Henry – each scored in double figures, but Miles scored 16 of the game's last 23 points to defeat the Panthers 56-53 Saturday in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

CAU (1-5, 0-1 SIAC) jumped on Miles (1-2, 1-0 SIAC) early, running out to a 12-point lead three times in the first half, twice on shots by Henry who had 11 first half points.

That lead grew to as many as 15 after Mitchell's 3-pointer early in the second half made it 32-17.  But the Golden Bears stayed the course, tying the game at 47-47 on two free throws by Damian Archer with 4:18 remaining.

The Panthers only mustered two field goals the rest of the way, while the Golden Bears went on a 16-7 run to take the game.    CAU had late opportunities – down 53-52 with 45 seconds left, Henry's steal led to a Ian Roach 3-point shot that was just off, and then with four seconds left and CAU down 55-53, Romaine Thomas' jumper just missed the mark.  Archer hit another free throw to provide the final margin of victory.

"That was a tough one for us," said CAU Head Coach George Lynch.  "We had a good practice Friday. I saw some improvements in the first half, but then in the second half, we kind of went back to our old ways – not sharing the ball as a team and trying to find the home run hitters."

Mitchell finished with a double-double – 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds – while Donaldson also had 14 points along with three steals.  Henry finished with 13 points, two steals, a rebound and an assist. Thomas had eight points, eight rebounds and a block.

Miles was led by Jelani Gayle-Watson's 15 points, while Archer and Jose Angueria-Roman both finished with 11 points.

Next up for the Panthers is Monday's home game at L.S. Epps Gymnasium against Tuskegee at 8 p.m. Tuskegee (0-4, 0-1 SIAC) fell to Morehouse 73-58 Saturday.

"We have to get ready for Tuskegee," Lynch said.  "We'll practice Sunday and watch film, watch film of the Tuskegee-Morehouse game and hopefully learn from our mistakes tonight and play for 40 minutes."
