Jalen Mitchell's eleven overtime points in overtime led Clark Atlanta to an 85-77 win over Xavier University of Louisiana Saturday in New Orleans.
CAU (1-3) erased a seven-point deficit with a 9-0 run near the end of regulation after 3-pointers by Mitchell and
Romaine Thomas, who hit two during that span, to take a 62-60 lead with 1:31 remaining. But the Panthers couldn't score after that, missing a couple of shots and a free throw while Xavier (4-3) hit two free throws with two seconds left to put the game into overtime. Â
But CAU 3-pointers by Mitchell,
Ian Roach and
Shelvick Henry pushed the Panthers out to a 78-70 lead over the first four minutes of the five-minute overtime period. Â That lead got up to as much as 11 points as Clark Atlanta earned the win.
The Panthers hit 4-of-5 shots – with 3-of-4 3-pointers – in overtime to take control of the game.
Henry led five Panthers in double-figures with 22 points, adding three rebounds and four assists. Mitchell finished with 18 points, three rebounds and six assists, while Thomas posted a double-double with 15 points and a team high ten rebounds. Roach, who had three 3-pointers, finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while
Austin Donaldson had ten points, three rebounds and four assists.
Johnell Lane led Xavier with 19 points.
The Panthers open the home portion of their season Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they host Alabama-Huntsville at 8 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
