Box Score Jalen Mitchell had 19 points as the Clark Atlanta University Panthers won their 14
th consecutive game in defeating Paine College 77-56 Monday in Augusta.
The Panthers are now 19-1 overall, 13-0 and tied for first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's East Division. The Panthers are ranked fourth in the NCAA South Region and 22
nd in the nation by D2SIDA.
Monday, CAU got their second win of the season over Paine (4-16, 3-10 SIAC) as they led the entire game. The Panthers led by as many as 18 points in the first half after Mitchell's layup with 3:54 left before halftime put CAU up 37-19.
While CAU's offense was clicking, they also asserted themselves on defense, only allowing Paine to hit eight field goals in the first half and just 26 percent of their shots.
Paine had a 12-6 spurt to start the second half, cutting the lead to eight points on Sam Bide's dunk with 15:17 left in the game. But Clark Atlanta put the game away with a 23-2 run over the next 11 minutes, culminating in a Mitchell layup with gave the Panthers their biggest lead, 71-42 with just under five minutes left in the game.
Mitchell finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, a steal and block.
Jamal Pollydore had 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal, while
Michael Vigilance scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had a block and a steal.
Anthony Williams dished 11 assists, had six points, three rebounds and two steals, while
Akil Douglas finished with eight points, nine rebounds and an assist.
Cameron Gaines led Paine with 13 points.
The Panthers out-rebounded Paine 50-35, hit nearly 42 percent of their shots, and knocked down 11 3-pointers with Mitchell and Pollydore hitting seven of them.
Clark Atlanta hits the road again Saturday, Feb. 3 when they visit Benedict at 4 p.m. The Panthers then go to Claflin on Monday, Feb. 5, before hosting Morehouse on Thursday, Feb. 8.
