Riding a 12-game winning streak, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers will host Claflin University tonight at 8 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium in a huge Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up.
CAU, 17-1 overall, is in a first-place tie in the SIAC East Division with Morehouse, both with 11-0 conference records. Claflin, who lost to Morehouse Saturday, is 10-1 and in second place in the conference race. Claflin is 17-2 overall.
The game will be a battle of the SIAC's two best scoring defenses – Claflin only gives up 63 points a game while Clark Atlanta only allows opponents 69 points per game.
Defense is one the main things that CAU head coach
Darrell Walker has stressed this season. In the last 11 games, only two teams have eclipsed the 70-point mark against the Panthers.
But CAU is nearly tied for second-highest scoring team in the conference, averaging nearly 82 points a game.
Akil Douglas leads four players who average double figures in scoring. Douglas, who also leads the Panthers in rebounding with nearly six per game, pours in 13.1 points per game, while
Jamal Pollydore averages 11.6 per game.
Austin Donaldson and
Shelvick Henry Jr. account for ten points a game for CAU.
Damien Davis averages nine points and nearly six boards per game, while
Jalen Mitchell also averages nine points per game.
Anthony Williams is in the top five in assists and continues to be the SIAC leader in assists-to-turnover ratio.
Claflin is led by Jaleel Charles (15.5 points per game) and Benjamin Williams (13,6 ppg). They also have the conference's top 3-point shooter in Jordan Jones who hits 49 percent of his shots beyond the arc.
