CAU Wins 11th Straight, Defeating Fort Valley State 77-66

Box Score Anthony Williams' 21 points led five players in double figures as Clark Atlanta University remained undefeated in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 77-66 win at Fort Valley State University Monday.

The Panthers are now 16-1 this season, 10-0 and in a second-place tie with Claflin in the SIAC East Division, just one game behind 11-0 Morehouse.  FVSU falls to 9-11, 6-6 in the SIAC.

Monday, Fort Valley State came out hot, leading by as many as eight points, taking an 18-10 lead midway through the first half.  CAU went on an 11-2 run that ended with Williams' layup that gave the Panthers their first lead at 21-20 with 8:11 left in the first half.

The teams traded baskets – and the lead – on the next two possessions, but after Jalen Mitchell's basket with 6:21 left in the half gave CAU a 26-24 lead, the Panthers would never trail again.

After leading 35-29 at halftime, the Panthers took full control by going on a 27-10 run over the first ten minutes of the second half.  Jamal Pollydore's 3-pointer with 10:40 left extended CAU's lead to 62-39, their largest lead of the game.

Williams finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Michael Vigilance had another big day off the bench with 16 points, four rebounds and two blocks.  Pollydore had 13 points, two rebounds and an assist, while Mitchell had 11 points and three rebounds.  Henry had ten points, one rebound, two assists, and a steal.

Jaylen McMillian led FVSU with 19 points.

"They came out with a lot of emotion like a lot of teams do against us," said CAU Head Coach Darrell Walker.  "We took the first punch and then we just grinded out the game for a 35-29 halftime lead.  In the second half, we really squeezed them. The defensive intensity turned up big time, and we made shots and we were able to push the basketball.  But the defensive intensity was really good.  Anytime you can win on the road, it's a great win."

The Panthers are back home Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Benedict College (15-3, 8-2 SIAC) at 2 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
