Road Trip to Albany State Ends in Final Minute Loss; 70-69

ALBANY, Ga. - Clark Atlanta women's basketball led the way for more than 95 percent of the game before a late rally by Albany State send the Panthers home with a one-point loss, 70-69. In the effort, Kiyanna Johnson led the Panthers in scoring for the third time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter | Marissa Mandeldove scored the opening points for Clark Atlanta on a 3-pointer after the Panthers fell behind 4-0. The basket opened up a 16-2 run for CAU that ended with a Nicole Graham 3-pointer with 5:30 remaining in the opening quarter. Clark Atlanta ended the quarter on a 15-6 run that gave CAU the 31-14 advantage.
 
Second Quarter | Albany State fought back, outscoring Clark Atlanta in the quarter 18-7. CAU received baskets in the quarter by Lauren Turner, Kiyanna Johnson and Mandeldove. Clark Atlanta led at the intermission 38-32.
 
Third Quarter | Albany State pointed the first three points of the second half prior to Clark Atlanta receiving a FT from Naquaisha Rattray and a Turner layup. Rattray and Turner later teamed up for back-to-back layups with 5:35 remaining in the quarter to push the advantage for CAU to seven points, 45-38. CAU picked up a late layups from Mandeldove and Graham and entered the final quarter leading 53-48.
 
Fourth Quarter | Albany State pulled within two points during a 12-6 run, 64-62, with 2:31 remaining in the game. Mandeldove was able to push the lead back to four points with a pair of made FT attempts and after ASU fought to tie the game with 1:31 left, 66-66, Johnson connected on a 3-pointer as 83 seconds remained in the game. Clark Atlanta would not score again with the Lady Rams picking up a pair for layups in the final seconds for the 70-69 victory.

TEAM NUMBERS:
Clark Atlanta shot 22-for-61 (36.1 percent) from the floor and 18-for-25 (72 percent) from the FT line. CAU was good on 7-of-18 shots from 3-point range but was just 2-for8 in the second half.
 
CAU played from ahead for 38:15 (95.6 percent of the game) and led the game by as many as 17 points in the second quarter.
 
Clark Atlanta led the game in bench scoring, 41-27 and points off turnovers, 22-13, while forcing 25 Lady Ram turnovers.

INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS:
Johnson scored a game-high 19 points as one of three Panthers in double-digit scoring along with Mandeldove (16) and Graham (11).
 
Mandeldove and Johnson each tied for the game-high with three steals  while Mandeldove leading the team with six assists. Turner tallied a team-high seven rebounds.

UP NEXT:
CAU will host Albany State in the rematch on Jan. 16 from L.S. Epps Gymnasium in the lone game this season that will count toward the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standing this season.
