Lady Panthers Tennis Dominates Weekend With Six Wins

Memphis, Tenn. --- The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers tennis team hit the road this past weekend for the second Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Round-Up Tournament of the season and served up a lot of wins against their competition, going 6-2 on the weekend.

The team recorded wins against Spring Hill College (5-0), Lane College (5-0), Albany State University (6-0), Tuskegee University (5-4), LeMoyne-Owen College (5-0) and Fort Valley State University (5-0), with their only losses on the weekend coming to Benedict College (5-4) in a nail biter, and SIAC leader Stillman College (5-2). The successful weekend was enough to keep the Lady Panthers in third place in the SIAC standings, trailing only Stillman and Benedict.

Match 1 - Benedict College (5-4, L)

The Lady Panthers edged out Benedict College in the doubles matchups 2-1, with wins coming from the team of Vonnick Boyogueno and DiAndrea Galloway at the No. 1 doubles position, and Khadija Elder and Vanessa Jean-Baptiste at the No. 3 position. However, Benedict would earn the victory in the singles matches, going 4-2, with the only CAU victories coming from Jean-Baptiste at the No. 4 spot and Galloway at the No. 5 spot.

Match 2 -Spring Hill College (5-0, W)

This matchup was one of many that CAU dominated over the weekend, with the Lady Panthers winning the first five matches of the contest, sealing the victory before the remainder of the games were finished. Tori Pradier won her singles match at the No. 1 position, and Boyogueno sealed the victory with the singles win at the No. 2 spot.

Match 3 - Lane College (5-0, W)

As in the prior match, Clark Atlanta would cruise to victory in this matchup as well, without losing a single game in the entire contest. Pradier and Avern Gumbs would earn the doubles victory at the No. 2 position (8-0), as Jean-Baptiste and Gumbs were the first to finish their singles matches to earn the team the victory.

Match 4 - Albany State University (6-0, W)

Another match, another sweep for the Lady Panthers as they dominated once again, with only the No. 3 spot doubles matchup being close, as Elder and Jean-Baptiste would earn the 8-6 victory. Pradier, Jean-Baptiste and Galloway would all win their singles matches handedly before the match was called.

Match 5 - Tuskegee University (5-4, W)

This would prove to be the toughest win of the weekend for the Lady Panthers, as they needed all nine matches to seal the victory. Tuskegee would jump out to a 2-to-1 lead after the doubles matchups, with only Pradier and Gumbs getting the victory at the No. 2 spot. The ladies would step it up in singles competition however, going 4-2 with victories coming from Pradier (No. 2), Jean-Baptiste (No. 3), Gumbs (No. 4), and Galloway (No. 5).

Match 6 - LeMoyne-Owen College (5-0, W)

LeMoyne-Owen would provide little resistance for CAU as the Lady Panthers rolled to victory. Clark Atlanta would not give up a single game in the three matches that were completed, as they earned the final two wins needed for victory through default, due to a lack of players for their opponents.

Match 7 - Stillman College (5-2, L)

Going into the match, the team knew this would be their toughest competition, as the SC Tigers sat atop the SIAC going into the matchup. However, CAU would be the team to jump out to the quick lead as Boyogueno/Galloway won their doubles match at the No. 1 spot, and Pradier/Gumbs quickly followed suit at the No. 2 spot. Stillman would quickly take back control of the match, winning the first four singles matches to clinch the victory, making the final two matches redundant.

Match 8 - Spring Hill (5-0, W)

The Lady Panthers wanted to bounce back quickly from their previous defeat and did just that as they knocked off the SIAC newcomers. Clark Atlanta dominated the doubles matchups and Pradier (No. 1) and Boyogueno (No. 2) would make quick work of their opponents in their singles matches to give CAU the victory and a 6-2 record on the weekend.

The tennis team will take the court this Thursday as they travel to West Point, Georgia to take on Point University in a non-conference matchup. The match is set to begin at 3 pm.
