Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Paine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Augusta, Ga. --- The Clark Atlanta University Panthers baseball team hit the road on Saturday to pay a visit to fellow Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) member, Paine College. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the home team did not show them much southern hospitality, as CAU dropped both games, 7-2 and 6-5.

In the first game of the day, the Panthers fell behind early in the 2nd inning, thanks to a couple of errors in the field. CAU would battle back in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a Johnny Surry single, which he turned into a run scored thanks to a couple stolen bases. However, Paine would use a four-run bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good, and would cruise to victory. Derrick Lott pitched a complete game for the Panthers in the loss.

The second game would prove to be a much tougher test for the home team, despite taking a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Clark Atlanta (0-6, 0-0 SIAC) would battle back however with one-run in the top of the second, and two in the top of the third thanks to a two-RBI double by St. George Pink. They would then tie the game up in the top of the fourth thanks to some offensive support from the pitcher, Jezreel Moore. Paine would have a big inning in the bottom of the fifth, as 7-of-9 batters came to the plate, and put two more on the board. CAU was able to get one-run across the plate in the top of the seventh, and brought the game-tying batter to the plate on numerous occasions, but were unable to get the crucial run, thanks to a groundout and a couple of strikeouts.

Moore pitched a complete game for the Panthers in the second half of the doubleheader.

The Panthers next scheduled home game versus Miles College, on Wednesday, February 25th, has been postponed due to inclement weather. A makeup date has not been scheduled at this point. CAU will take the field next as they take on Morehouse College, in what is a road game for the Panthers, albeit a short trip. The games will be played at Perkerson Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Game times for the four game set are slated for 12 and 3 on Saturday, February 28th, as well as on Sunday the 29th.
