ATLANTA, Ga. - Fueled by the largest crowd of the season at Epps Gymnasium, the volleyball team at Clark Atlanta University rallied to win the final two sets of a five-set marathon to end the weekend with a 1-2 record. CAU previously lost to Loyola (La.) and North Greenville on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENEDMatch 1 vs. Loyola | 20-25, 17-25, 25-19, 19-25Loyola took the opening two sets and won the match with aide from 28 CAU errors while tallying 22 assists compared to just three for CAU.
Cori Smith registered a team-best 15 kills with
Sierra Scoggins chipping in nine.
Tierra Ford blocked four shots in the effort.
Match 2 vs. North Greenville | 25-22, 19-25, 10-25, 16-25Clark Atlanta opened the match by claiming the opening set before dropping three in-a-row to North Greenville for the second loss of the evening. The stats were close with NGU committing 20 error to the 21 CAU errors, with the assist numbers favoring the visiting team 54-41. Smith (13) and Scoggins (1) each added double-digit kill games with
Sabrina Tucker adding nine in the match.
Kiara Govan ended the night with a 33-assist match.
Match 3 vs. Claflin | 25-27, 25-17, 13-25, 25-20, 15-11In the lone match on Sunday, Clark Atlanta rallied to claim the final two sets for the victory over SIAC East rival Claflin University. CAU ended the night on the short side of kills (57-54) but forced 25 errors in the win. Smith (22) and Scoggins (15) recorded consecutive double-digit kill efforts with Govan (30) and Tenecia Winston (18) each providing the assists.
CAU will travel to Benedict on Oct. 21 before returning home versus Emmanuel College on Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. from Epps Gymnasium.
