CAU Comes Up Short in Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Atlanta, Ga.---Despite Clark Atlanta University's comeback effort, the Panthers fall short in their baseball home opener with a double-header loss (1-2 and 5-6) to Virginia State University at Bill Evans Field today.

Trailing much of the first game, the Panthers (1-3) got a late run in the bottom of the seventh inning after freshman Malcolm Seabrooks' s sacrifice fly advanced Omar Prieto-Torres to cut a 2-0 deficit, but that would be as close as they would come to lead.

In game two, Seabrooks' RBI double brought in Prieto-Torres again in the first inning to give Clark Atlanta a slim 1-0 advantage, before Virginia State opened a 5-1 lead through the top of the fifth. CAU's bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as the Panthers cut the deficit to one point and knotted the game at five through six innings. Virginia State broke the tie in the top of the seventh to take back the lead on an RBI single by David Markins. It was three and out for the Panthers to close out the seventh that wrapped up the victory for the Trojans.

Clark Atlanta split a double-header with Morehouse College Friday in the season opener with a 6-3 loss in game one and a 15-0 shutout in game two.

Next, the Panthers will travel to face Columbus State Wednesday, Feb. 12, for a double-header beginning with the first pitch at 4 p.m.
