Clark Atlanta Sweeps Morehouse in Double-Header; Falls to Virginia State at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Atlanta, Ga.---Freshman shortstopThomas Smothernman smacked a three-run blast over the left field wall that helped the Clark Atlanta University Panthers sweep AUC foe Morehouse College (9-1 and 8-7) Friday, before an extra-inning loss,10-7, to Virginia State Saturday in baseball action at Bill Evans Field.

In game one of the double-header against Morehouse, CAU freshman Lonnie Cooper (1-0) picked up his first win on the mound this season as the Panthers cruised to a comfortable victory. As a team, the Panthers had 10 hits and three errors. Morehouse, however, took an early 5-0 lead after the second inning of game two. Senior Jay Carter revived the bats again with a solo homerun at the bottom of the third and the Panthers added three more runs in the fourth. After five innings, the Maroon Tigers held a 7-6 advantage, but failed to score on 10 plate appearances to finish the game while Smotherman scored one more insurance run in the sixth and hit his second RBI of the game to win it for Panthers in the final inning. Clark Atlanta freshman pitcher Demarcus Franklin recorded both saves in the wins over Morehouse.

The scoring frenzy continued as the Panthers put up five runs in the sixth inning against Virginia State capped by Kelvin Tanner's two-run shot that put them up 6-5. After starting the ninth inning with a 7-6 lead, an error caused the Panthers to give up the tieing run. With a runner on third, CAU could not capitalize as Virginia State added three runs in the 10th inning to seal the win. Devin Franklin (0-1) was the losing pitcher on the mound for the Panthers.

Though the Panthers' loss to Virigina State halted their three-game winning streak to open the 2013 season, they have won more than half of all of their games from last year. Clark Atlanta (3-2) will travel to play a weekend series against Georgia Southwestern, Friday, Feb. 15-16. CAU next home series will be March 1-2 against Selma University at 1 p.m., at Bill Evans Field.
