Lady Panthers Advance to Black College Invitational Championship with Win Over Virginia Union

Garner leads all scorers with 18 points in the win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Clark Atlanta rallied from an early deficit to defeat Virginia Union 72-64 in the opening game of the inaugural Black College Invitational Championship on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Panthers advanced to Saturday's title game, where they will face the winner of Johnson C. Smith vs. Livingstone at Bojangles Coliseum.

Atreonia Garner led all scorers with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Corriana Evans added 11 points, three rebounds, and a team-high five assists.

Clark Atlanta struggled early, falling behind 10-1, but trimmed the deficit to 19-13 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Panthers took control in the second, forcing four turnovers and outscoring Virginia Union 16-5 to take a 29-24 halftime lead.

Clark Atlanta dominated the third quarter, shooting 73% from the field and extending its lead to as many as 20 points (56-36) with 1:52 left in the period. A 28-point quarter gave CAU a commanding 18-point lead heading into the fourth.
Virginia Union outscored Clark Atlanta 25-15 in the final frame, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

Clark Atlanta shot 51% from the field, 54% from the free-throw line, and 18% from three-point range. Virginia Union held a 43-37 rebounding advantage, but Clark Atlanta controlled the paint, outscoring VUU 52-44 inside.
