Baseball Drops Home Series Against Rust College

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Clark Atlanta Panthers' baseball team lost their series to Rust College after dropping the first game 7-4, followed by a 6-5 win and lastly a 6-4 loss in game three on Saturday afternoon at Gresham Park.

GAME ONE

The Panthers (3-1) got off to a strong start, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Sean Stewart and Asa Waites each crossed the plate early, giving Clark Atlanta a 2-2 tie through two frames
Rust (1-4) kept pace with single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game open in the eighth. The Bearcats plated three runs in the frame, capitalizing on timely hitting and a pair of walks to take a commanding 7-3 lead.
Clark Atlanta managed to scratch across a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Rust closer Darius Coble shut the door in the ninth to seal the win.

Clark Atlanta's offense struggled to find consistency, mustering just six hits while striking out five times. The Panthers did showcase power, with Dylan Diaz belting a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Dylan Scott went five innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. Reliever Arvis Lattin faced three batters in the eighth but struggled with control, issuing two walks and two wild pitches. Coble then entered and earned the save with 1.2 innings of hitless relief.

GAME TWO

Clark Atlanta University bounced back from Friday's loss with a strong all-around performance Saturday, holding off Rust College 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (4-1) jumped out early, plating two runs in the first inning and adding another in the third. Rust (1-5) responded with a three-run third inning to tie the game, but Clark Atlanta regained control with two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to build a 6-4 lead.
Clark Atlanta shortstop Sean Stewart sparked the offense, scoring three runs while stealing three bases. Andrew Leonard added a key RBI double, and Tucker Love drove in two runs to pace the Panthers' attack.

On the mound, freshman pitcher Stacy Johnson was stellar, tossing a complete game while striking out five. He allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) but did not issue a walk. Johnson kept the Bearcats in check over the final innings, stranding the tying run on base in the seventh to secure the victory.

Rust's offense was led by Malik Berrie, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI double. The Bearcats threatened in the late innings, pushing across a run in the seventh, but Johnson closed the door with a groundout to end the game.

GAME THREE

Clark Atlanta saw its late lead slip away in game three as Rust College used a seventh-inning rally to secure a 6-4 victory.

The Panthers (4-2) jumped out to an early advantage, scoring three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single from catcher Corrage Montgomery. Braelin Mitchell added a solo home run in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-3.
Rust (2-5) responded with a big seventh inning, plating two runs off reliever Tucker Love to claim the lead. Clark Atlanta managed just six hits on the day while leaving seven runners stranded.

Starting pitcher Asa Waites turned in a solid performance, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings, striking out four. Love (0-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs in the final frame.
Rust was led by Malik Berrie, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Pitcher Marques Smith earned the complete-game win, striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs over seven innings.

UP NEXT

The Panthers return to the diamond next Saturday, February 15 as they open conference play against Spring Hill.
