Panthers Baseball Opens the Season 2-0 After Opening Day Sweep of Virginia State

Clark Atlanta bests Virginia State to start the season 2-0

ATLANTA, Ga. – For the first time in recent history, the Clark Atlanta Panthers baseball team opens the season 2-0 after defeating CIAA foe Virginia State in Saturday afternoon's opening day doubleheader. The Panthers bested the Trojans 3-1 in game one followed by an 11-0 shutout in game two.

GAME ONE

A dominant pitching performance from Asa Waites and a clutch sixth-inning rally lifted Clark Atlanta to a 3-1 victory over Virginia State in their season opener at Gresham Park.

Waites (1-0) went the distance, tossing a complete-game gem while allowing just five hits and one unearned run. The senior struck out seven and walked none, keeping the Trojans (0-1) off balance throughout the afternoon.

After five scoreless innings, the Panthers (1-0) broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Alijah Robinson drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, while Justin Johnson and Jairus Harris added insurance with run-producing plays of their own.

Virginia State plated its lone run in the top of the sixth, capitalizing on a Clark Atlanta error. However, Waites shut the door in the seventh, sealing the Panthers' first win of the season.

GAME TWO

A seven-run sixth inning and a stellar pitching performance propelled Clark Atlanta to an 11-0 rout of Virginia State in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, sealing a two-game lead in the series.

The Panthers (2-0) took control early, scoring in the second and third innings before exploding for seven runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Jairus Harris delivered a key two-run triple, while Braelin Mitchell and Alijah Robinson each drove in multiple runs to lead the offensive surge.

Starting pitcher Dylan Scott (1-0) was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits and striking out eight. He kept the Trojans (0-2) off balance, inducing seven groundouts and five flyouts.

Virginia State struggled at the plate, managing only four hits while committing four errors in the field. Starting pitcher Thomas Ealey (0-1) took the loss despite recording eight strikeouts over five innings.

Clark Atlanta capitalized on Virginia State's mistakes, drawing seven walks and taking advantage of timely hitting to secure the lopsided victory.
