Clark Atlanta Outlasts LeMoyne-Owen in Nailbiting Home Opener

Panthers secure first conference win

ATLANTA, Ga. – Senior Najhae Colón sank three crucial  go-ahead free throws with under 30 seconds left to help the Panthers outlast LeMoyne Owen 63-62 in Clark Atlanta's home opener on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Clark Atlanta improves to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Colón led the Panthers in scoring with 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Panthers bolted out to an 18-4 lead after Kalen White drained a three pointer with 12:16 left to play in the first half. Colón added two early threes to jumpstart CAU.
  • Clark Atlanta saw their lead shrink to just two points (33-31) headed into the intermission after the Magicians finished the half outscoring the Panthers 27-15 in the final 12 minutes. Chase Hill and Najhae Colón led CAU with six points apiece in the first frame.
  • LeMoyne-Owen opened up the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 38-35 at the under-16 media timeout.
  • The Magicians lead swelled to 15 points with five minutes left to play in regulation.
  • Clark Atlanta stormed back with a 18-3 run to knot the score at 62 apiece with 30 seconds left to play.
  • Colon sank the final of his three free throws to put the Panthers back in front 63-62 as they held on to secure the home opening victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • The Panthers shot 16-of-40 from the field, 5-of-17 from three, and 26-of-40 from the charity stripe. Clark Atlanta's reserves poured in 43 points compared to LOC's 29 bench points.
  • The Magicians outrebounded the Panthers 40-38 with 15 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end.
  • Najhae Colón led Clark Atlanta with 13 points followed by Chase Hill with nine points in the win. Jadyn Shider led on the boards for CAU with a team-high eight rebounds.
