Panthers Start 2-0 For The First Time Since 2017 After 26-22 Win Over Allen In Home Opener

Panthers move to 2-0 in Teddy Keaton era

ATLANTA, Ga. – In a hard-fought home opener, head coach Teddy Keaton led the Clark Atlanta Panthers past his former Allen University Yellow Jackets as the CAU bested Allen 26-22 on Saturday afternoon inside Panther Stadium. Freshman running back Trayvon Pinder led the rushing attack for Clark Atlanta with 64 yards on 17 attempts out of the backfield. Armone Harris led the aerial attack with 80 yards, six catches, and the game-winning touchdown with 43 seconds left to play.

The Yellow Jackets stung first in Saturday's matchup after Jamir Dismukes connected with Kaleb Commings for a 48-yard touchdown pass but missed the PAT to take a 6-0 lead over the Panthers. Clark Atlanta responded with a 46-yard field goal from freshman Leonardo Cabrera to cut the margin in half.

Cabrera tacked on a 36-yarder to knot the score at six apiece with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter. The freshman kicker gave the Panthers their first lead on his third attempt from 29 yards to put CAU in front 9-6 with three minutes left in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets fumbled the kickoff return on the following drive, giving the Panthers the ball back after N'Zoyn Poole caused and recovered the fumble to set up Cabrera's 30-yard field goal to extend the lead to 12-6 going into the half.

The Panthers' first drive of the second half ended in David Wright's first rushing touchdown of the year after finding pay dirt on a 1-yard scamper to give CAU a 19-6 lead at the 13:31 mark in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets responded with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 19-12 midway through the third frame. Both clubs remained scoreless for the rest of the third quarter.

Allen's Sam Herman booted in a 34-yarder to bring the Yellow Jackets within four at 19-15 with 10:30 left to play in the fourth. The Panthers punted on the following drive and the Yellow Jackets capitalized with a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to regain the lead with three minutes left to play in regulation.

Clark Atlanta's Armone Harris capped off a 9-play, 65-yard touchdown drive with a seven-yard touchdown reception with 43 seconds left to reinforce the Panthers' lead at 26-22. The Yellow Jackets marched down the field on one final drive but fumbled on the one-yard line to give Clark Atlanta the 26-22 win on their home turf.
