Lady Panthers Take Down Fourth Ranked Tampa on the Road

Clark Atlanta earns huge win over nationally ranked Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – Clark Atlanta opened the 2024 season with a huge win over the fourth-ranked University of Tampa Spartans. The Lady Panthers took down the nationally ranked Spartans 65-58 on their home court to start the season 1-0.

Atreonia Garner carried the team with 17 points and nine rebounds, followed by Trinity Jones with 13 points and two rebounds. Faith Bland and Corriana Evans also chipped in on the offensive end with a combined 16 points in the victory.

The Spartans kept pace with Clark in the first quarter, even taking the lead and tying the game at 14-14. However, with 1:53 remaining, CAU drained a three-pointer and a jumper, closing the quarter with a five-point lead at 19-14.

After the minute break, Clark hit the court doubling down on defense in the quarter. They held the lead for the majority of the period until the final two minutes when the momentum shifted slightly. Fortunately, a defensive rebound and a timely steal set up Trinity Jones at the free-throw line with just 26 seconds remaining. Jones made both shots, securing a 33-30 lead for Clark heading into halftime.

The third quarter was a slow one for both teams, with a scoring drought lasting about five minutes. Clark maintained the lead until turnovers and fouls allowed the Spartans to catch up. Despite these setbacks, the Lady Panthers finished the quarter ahead, 44-43. The fourth quarter was a gritty back-and-forth, but Clark poured in 21 points to clinch the victory, 65-58. Key factors in the win were Clark's dominance in points off turnovers, bench contributions, and points in the paint, all of which sealed the Lady Panthers win.

CAU is back in action tomorrow at Marion Bowman Activities Center in St. Leo at 1:00 p.m.
