Strong First Half Powers Panthers Past Shaw in Home Opener

Men's basketball improves to 2-1

ATLANTA, Ga. — Clark Atlanta University leveraged a dominant first half to defeat Shaw University 78-68 on Saturday night at L.S. Epps Gym. The Panthers' balanced attack and tenacious defense powered them to their second win of the season, improving their record to 2-1.

Clark Atlanta opened with a blazing start, outscoring Shaw 43-23 in the first half. The Panthers shot 58.6% from the field, including 7-for-15 from three-point range, while limiting Shaw to 26.7% shooting in the opening period.

Jalen Williams led the way for Clark Atlanta, scoring 19 points, including three three-pointers. Dez'Mond Perkins chipped in 14 points and added five rebounds. Shemani Fuller contributed seven points, five rebounds, and a crucial block that energized the home crowd of 1,204.

Shaw University (1-3) mounted a second-half rally, fueled by Ellija Preddy's 14 points and five steals. Dee Barnes added 12 points, and Ty Outlaw recorded nine points and seven rebounds. Despite outscoring Clark Atlanta 45-35 in the second half, Shaw's comeback attempt fell short.

Clark Atlanta's defense was pivotal, registering seven blocks and holding Shaw to just 22.7% shooting from three-point range. The Panthers also out-rebounded Shaw 42-39 and capitalized on fast-break opportunities, scoring 17 points in transition.

Shaw's bench provided a spark, scoring 37 points, but turnovers and early shooting struggles proved too much to overcome.

A three-pointer by Jalen Williams with 16:34 remaining extended Clark Atlanta's lead to 50-29, halting Shaw's momentum and sealing the Panthers' grip on the game.

Clark Atlanta will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they aim to build on their promising start.
