Panthers Surpass Last Season's Win Total with 77-71 Win over Kentucky State

Panthers improve to 9-3 on the season

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Clark Atlanta men's basketball team (9-3, 3-3 SIAC) downed the Kentucky State Thorobreds (3-8, 1-7 SIAC) 77-71 on Saturday afternoon on the way to their second straight win. With the win, the Panthers surpass last season's win total of eight wins.

Andrew Stewart led Clark Atlanta in scoring with 15 points on 60% (6-10) shooting from the field, 50% (1-2) from three-point range, and a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Shemani Fuller and Jalen NeSmith each chipped in 13 points in the win. Fuller also led the Panthers in rebounds with six.

Clark Atlanta jumped out to an early seven-point lead (14-7) over Kentucky State just five minutes into the contest. Andrew Stewart and Xavier Griffith combined for 10 of CAU's first 14 points.

With just under eight minutes to play in the first half, the Panthers lead grew to as high as nine points. However, KSU outscored CAU 21-11 down the stretch to hold a one-point edge over the Panthers headed into the locker room.

Kentucky State opened the second half on a 7-1 run only for the Panthers to storm back to take a 51-50 after a fastbreak layup from Andrew Stewart with 15:35 left to play. Both teams found themselves knotted at 58-58 midway through the second half before KSU used another 7-1 run to take a six-point lead (66-59) at the 9:39 mark.

The Panthers battled back to take a 71-70 advantage after Shemani Fuller knocked down a crucial jumper to put CAU in the lead with just under four minutes left in regulation. Clark Atlanta took the lead and never looked back as they outlasted Kentucky State 77-71 to escape with their second conference road win of the season.

The Panthers shot 42.4% from the field and 30.8% from downtown on the way to the win. Clark Atlanta's bench outscored KSU's 36-10 while also scoring 15 points on the fastbreak compared to Kentucky State's zero. CAU also won the paint-scoring battle 32-24.
