PREVIEW: Clark Atlanta Heads to Erskine College Tournament to Open Season

CAU Looks to Improve on Last Season

ATLANTA (August 31, 2023) – The Clark Atlanta University (CAU) womens volleyball team will hit the road to start the 2023 season with a trio of matches at the Erskine College Tournament in Due West, S.C. The Lady Panthers will face Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), Tusculum University (TU), and Erskine College (EC) starting Friday, Sept. 1-2.

MATCHUP PREVIEW
 
Clark Atlanta's matchups between Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum will be their first meetings of all time on the court. However, CAU and Erskine met for the first time last season (Aug. 26) with Erskine coming out on top 3-0 in Due West, S.C.
 
CLARK ATLANTA
 
As a team in 2022, Clark Atlanta registered 975 kills for an average of 9.9 kills per set. The Lady Panthers averaged 9.1 assists per set with a total of 891 on the season. On the defensive end, CAU collected 1351 digs and 121.5 total blocks. 

CAU boasts several key returners for the 2023 season including sophomore Sanaa Simmons (Tallahassee, Fla.) who led the Lady Panthers in assists with an outstanding 703 helpers on the year. Simmons also collected a team-high 31 service aces. Preseason Second Team All-Conference selection junior Shynique McGee (Atlanta, Ga.) looks to continue last season's success after recording a team-high 334 kills and 211 digs. 
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
Clark Atlanta closed out the 2022 regular season with a 3-0 loss to conference rival Albany State in Albany, Ga. With the loss, CAU finished the regular season with a 13-20 record. The Lady Panthers look to change that as they head into the 2023 season under new leadership with head coach Joelle Mafo in her first year at the helm.  
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
Clark Atlanta womens volleyball returns to the friendly confines of Epps Gymnasium on Wednesday, Sept. 6 as they take on conference foe Fort Valley State at 6 p.m.
