Baseball Falls in Conference Series to Savannah State, Garner Hits Grand Slam to Secure Game Two

ATLANTA, Ga. | In the Panthers' final home test of the season, Clark Atlanta suffered a 2-1 series loss to the Savannah State Tigers. Despite the loss, CAU's Andrew Garner hit a grand slam home run to secure the victory in game two.

GAME 1

Savannah State took game one over Clark Atlanta with a final score of 11-1. The Savannah State Tigers started strong, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone, including a single from Cooper LeTellier and a 2-RBI single from Joe Smith. Clark Atlanta responded in the second inning with a run but was unable to overcome the deficit. Savannah State added to their lead in the fifth inning with two more unearned runs due to errors by Clark Atlanta. They sealed the win with three more runs in the eighth inning. Joseph II hit a sacrifice fly to score Wright, and Rushin walked with bases loaded to bring in Green.

GAME 2

Savannah State started the game strong with two early home runs by Andrai Wright and Joe Smith. Clark Atlanta's Cedric Holt then hit a double, driving in two runs to put CAU on the scoreboard. Savannah State maintained the lead until the eighth inning when Clark Atlanta's Darrin Brown reached home on an error, to tie the game at eight apiece. The Panthers sealed the victory with a grand slam by Garner in the eighth inning, winning the game 12-8. Despite Savannah State's early lead, Clark Atlanta's late-game offensive surge secured the win for the Panthers on Senior Day. 

GAME 3

In a closely contested game three, Clark Atlanta had a solid performance against Savannah State, despite losing 5-8. In the first inning, Daniel Gay's homer brought the team within one run of SSU, and Kentavious Veal's single in the third scored Michael Fegins, followed by a run on an error, bringing the Panthers within one run again. Darrin Brown Jr.'s double in the sixth tied the game, and Gay's fielder's choice in the seventh brought the Panthers within three runs of Savannah State. Despite the loss, the Panthers fought hard against Savannah State's dominant offense, and their defense held strong in the later innings. With the loss, Clark Atlanta falls to 14-25 overall on the season.

Clark Atlanta heads to Rome, Georgia on Tuesday, April 25, for a single-game non-conference matchup against the Shorter Hawks at 2 p.m.
