Lady Panthers Open Conference Play with a Loss to Miles College

Lady Panthers suffer second-straight loss

ATLANTA, Ga. — Saturday (Nov. 25) kicked off 2023-2024 SIAC women's basketball conference play, as Clark Atlanta took on Miles College in L.S. Epps Gymnasium. The Lady Panthers battled to the last second with the help of leading scorers Janiah Ellis and Trinity Jones both scoring 15 points, but ultimately fell short 75-73 to the Lady Bears.

Freshman small forward Atreonia Garner forced a turnover in the first 30 seconds of the game, showing the Panthers were ready for a defensive battle. Evans led the Lady Panthers in the first quarter with eight points and was helped defensively by center De'Asia Reid who had two rebounds and one block shot. Jones followed the next quarter putting up seven points, two jumpers, and a three-pointer with the assist from Garner. Both teams match up the first half with Miles leading 29 to 24. The Lady Panthers shot 34 percent in the paint, 62 percent from the line, and 12 percent from beyond the arc.

Miles charged out the second half putting up a 10-point spread four minutes into the quarter. Janiah Ellis and freshman guard Myori Pruit began to answer back both scoring 4 points and were helped defensively with 3 steals, two for Ellis and one for Denise Stine, and Garner with another four rebounds.

The Lady Panthers outscored the Golden Bears in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to clinch the win. Eliis and Garner led in scoring with four points each and were helped by Pruitt with three points. Down by seven with less than two minutes left in the game, Evans was assisted by Pruitt with a layup making the score 66-71. Seconds later, Jones lays up two in the paint and was followed by Garner with another two in the paint, making it a two-point game. Miles tried to go on a points spree, but Ellis answered after being fouled behind the three-point line and executed the three-point play.

The Lady Panthers finished the game 75-73, losing to the Bears in a hard-fought defeat. Leading scorers for the Panther were Ellis and Jones with 15 points, and Evans with 14. Garner ended the game with 10 points and led the team in rebounds (9), and steals (4). As a team, Clark Atlanta shot 50 percent from field goal range, 8.3 percent from three, and 46.7 percent from the foul line.

The Lady Panthers will hit the road as they take on Clayton State University Lakers on Wednesday, Nov. 29th in Morrow, Ga. at 5:30 p.m.
