Lady Panthers Fall to Edward Waters in Five Sets in SIAC Tournament Semifinal

Lady Panthers finish 21-10 overall

JONESBORO, Ga. – In a hard-fought battle, Clark Atlanta women's volleyball's postseason run ended with a 3-2 deciding set loss to the top seed Edward Waters on Friday afternoon inside the Tsunami Volleyball Center. 

The Lady Panthers were led on the offensive end by Shynique McGee with a team-high 18 kills and an attacking percentage of .273% followed by Halle Mitchell with 14 kills (.194%). 

Despite the loss, sophomore setter Sanaa Simmons eclipsed the 1,000 career assists mark with her 23 assists against the Lady Tigers.

Makayla Murphy also rejected a season-high 11 blocks on the defensive end for CAU.

"We wanted this win very bad, but I know we're now very eager to win and we'll definitely put in the work in the offseason to do so next season." said head coach Joelle Mafo

Edward Waters took the first two sets 25-17 and 25-18 to mount a 2-0 match lead over Clark Atlanta. The Lady Panthers were able to take a 16-8 lead midway through set three after a 5-0 run put them ahead by eight. McGee spiked five kills in set three to secure a 25-19 win and avoid the sweep. 

Halle Mitchell logged five kills in set four giving CAU a 25-17 win and even the match score at 2-all. Clark Atlanta dropped the deciding set 15-11 to Edward Waters despite a nailbiting comeback effort.

As a team, Clark Atlanta registered an attacking percentage of .169 and won the service ace battle 6-5. Clark Atlanta finished the season with a  21-10 (14-5 SIAC) record which is their best record since the 2012 season when they won the tournament.
