Page, Freeman Homers Not Enough as CAU Falls to Claflin

Justice Page and Jerry Freeman homered together for the second time in five games, but it wasn't enough as the Clark Atlanta University Panthers fell to Claflin University 14-8 in Orangeburg, S.C.., Wednesday.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Clark Atlanta (11-26, 4-16 SIAC) while former SIAC member Claflin (3-20), now in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, got their first win in six games. That victory was a 19-18 walk-off win over Morehouse College on March 30.

Wednesday, Claflin jumped out early when they got two runs in the first on a Jorden Dixon wild pitch, followed by an RBI triple by Da'Avion Sumpter.  Claflin struck again in the second with eight runs on a two-run homer, a two-run double and single that scored two runs, followed by two sacrifice flies that made it 10-0.

Page doubled in a run in the sixth to put CAU on the board. But Claflin added four runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 14-1.  The Panthers tried to claw their way back into it in the seventh when Eason Bing doubled and scored on a ground out.  Winston Noel then singled in Khalil Manuel.  He then scored on a failed pickoff attempt as CAU made 14-4. CAU got a run in the eighth when Freeman homered.  In the ninth, Darrin Brown doubled and came in on Page's two-run home run. Freeman was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a DeAndre Swift single to make it 14-8.  But that was as close as they would get as Claflin got the victory.

Page led CAU with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.  His home run was his third in the last five games.  Freeman's homer was his second in the last five games. Daniel Gay was 2-for-5 with an RBI. he also stole two bases.  CAU used nine pitchers, with starter Dixon taking the loss as he gave up eight runs and seven hits to ten batters.

Claflin was led by Sumpter who was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Kobe Miller was also 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cameron Mitchum had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Joshua Cooper was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  MacKenzie Gay got the win for Claflin, going six innings and striking out six.  He gave up one run on four hits.

Clark Atlanta now jumps back into conference play when Friday they host Atlanta University Center rival Morehouse in a three-game series.  Friday they play a single game beginning at 4 p.m. and then a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m.  All three games will be played at Bill Evans Field in College Park, Ga.
