CAU Takes Two of Three From Edward Waters

The Clark Atlanta University Panthers baseball team took two of three games during their weekend series against Edward Waters University at Bill Evns Field in College Park, Ga.

In the first game on Saturday, March 19, the Panthers got a walk-off 3-2 victory in the 11th inning over Edward Waters.  

CAU had been down 2-1 in the seventh after Edward Waters' Keilin Washington scored on a sacrifice fly.  CAU tied it in the bottom of the seventh Darrin Brown, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a DeAndre Swift single. 

The game went into extra innings and was still tied when Brown doubled in the 11th inning.  Justice Page then reached when his ground ball was booted by EWU's shortstop, allowing Brown to score the winning run.

Brown's two doubles and two runs scored led CAU.  Arthur Burrell homered while Swift drove in a run. Jerry Freeman also added a double.   On the mound, Page got the win after throw the final two 2 1/3 innings, striking out three.  Asa Waites went seven innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs.  He struck out four.  Andrew Garner gave up one hit in one and 2/3 innings.

For EWU, Washington led the way with three hits and scored twice. Daquarius Thompkins had two hits, as did Adrian Laro.  Frank Grimaldi took the loss for EWU, while Alexander Davila struck out seven over eight innings.  He gave up five hits and two runs.

On Sunday, the day started slow for the Panthers as they could only muster three hits in falling to Edward Waters 11-0 in the first game of their doubleheader.   Edward Waters had big innings in the fourth and fifth when they scored a combined nine runs to the put the game away.

Winston Noel, Andrew Gaskin and Eason Bing had CAU's hits, with Bing and Gaskin getting doubles.  Michael Fegins gave up eight hits and six runs, five of them earned, to take the loss on the mound. 

Laro led EWU with three hits, including a double.  He scored three times.  Anthony Roman and Thompkins both homered for the Tigers.  Anthony Bayyat got the win for EWU as he gave up only three hits and struck out three over five innings in blanking CAU.

The final game of the series, CAU rallied from a three-run deficit with four runs in the sixth inning to earn a 4-3 victory over EWU. 

The Tigers jumped out early, getting a first-inning homer from Leonel Garcia and two more runs when Washington singled in two runs in the second as EWU led 3-0.

But in the sixth, Burrell scored on a Brown single to put CAU on the board.  Bing scored on a passed ball.  Brown then scored on a Freeman single to tie the game at 3-3.  Swift then drove in what turned out to be the winning run when he singled to center, allowing Page to score to make it 4-3.  The top of the seventh saw Lorenzo Petersen strike out two and forced a ground out to Gaskin to close out the win.

Swift had two hits and drove in a run while Bing, Gaskin, Brown and Dorian Andrews had hits for CAU.  Petersen got the complete game victory for the Panthers, striking out five and giving up six hits over seven innings. 

Garcia finished with two hits for EWU, with Washington also adding a pair of singles and two RBIs. Luis Valero took the loss for the Tigers but gave up just three hits and struck out seven.

Next up for the Panthers is a doubleheader against Morris College on Thursday, March 24 beginning at 1 p.m. at Bill Evans Field.
