CAU Falls to LeMoyne-Owen In SIAC Tourney Second Round

Jalen Williams led four Panthers in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Clark Atlanta fell to LeMoyne-Owen 80-74 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Panthers end their season with a 12-16 record.  LeMoyne-Owen advances to a quarterfinal round matchup on Thursday with the second seed from the East Division, Benedict.

Tuesday, Clark Atlanta was coming off a first-round win over Central State on Monday to take on a LeMoyne-Owen team that CAU lost to in Memphis last Thursday.

After a slow start in which they were down 12 points five minutes into Tuesday's game, CAU took the lead on a Chris Martin 3-pointer that capped a seven-minute, 18-5 Panther run to put Clark Atlanta up 20-19.  CAU was able to stretch the lead to five points later in the half and carried a 34-33 lead at halftime.

The two teams traded the lead throughout the first part of the second half and neither team could get a lead of more than four points.  Justin Longstreet hit a jumper with 7:48 remaining that tied the game at 62-62.  But with Martin on the bench after getting his fourth foul early in the half, the CAU offense hit a lull.

CAU only got one basket over the next two minutes and 36 seconds while the Magicians' Jaquan Lawrence had a basket and three free throws along with two Andrew Anderson free throws to give LeMoyne-Owen a 69-64 lead with 5:12 remaining.

Shannon Smith followed up with a layup and free throw to pull CAU to within two at 69-67 with 3:29 remaining.  With 1:44 remaining, Jalen Williams tied the game at 71-71 on a breakaway layup.  But over the next minute, CAU couldn't connect on their next two field goal attempts while LeMoyne-Owen hit four free throws and a jumper during that span to go up 77-71 with 18 seconds left.

Smith countered with a 3-pointer of his own with 15 seconds left to make it 77-74.   Anderson extended the Magicians' lead to 78-74 when he hit one of two free throws with six seconds left.  Martin failed to connect on a 3-pointer for CAU on the next trip down court. LeMoyne-Owen put the game away with two more free throws with two seconds remaining.

Williams led Clark Atlanta with 18 points while grabbing three rebounds and dishing three assists.  Martin had 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.  Rodney Simon finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks while Longstreet had 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Longstreet and Simon are seniors who were playing their final games in a CAU uniform, as were Eric Reed Jr.  (six points, two rebounds), Smith (five points, five rebounds and four assists), Shane Pearley (two points, two rebounds), and Vernice Seriale III (four rebounds, two assists and a steal).

Lawrence led LeMoyne-Owen with 19 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks, a steal and an assist.  Dwight Murray had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Gjerard Wilson finished with 13 points.
