CAU Defeats Allen 93-80 Saturday

For the second time in less than a week, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers defeated Allen University, this time 93-80 in Columbia, S.C., Saturday.

Clark Atlanta (8-10, 3-7 SIAC) beat Allen (4-15) on Monday, Jan. 31 86-76 at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

Saturday, CAU scored 24 points off of 12 Allen turnovers and led basically the entire game.  After the Yellow Jackets scored the game's first basket, CAU sprinted out to a 21-7 lead after a Chris Martin layup 12:22 into the first half.  Allen fought back, outscoring CAU 13-5 to pull to within six points at 26-20 with 7:43 left in the half.

But layups by Justin Longstreet and Vernice Seriale III, along with 3-pointers by Eric Reed Jr. and Martin were enough to push the Panthers' lead back out to 14 points at 36-22 with 4:27 left in the half.
That lead got up to 18 points three times before the half ended with CAU holding a 49-32 lead.

In the second half, the CAU lead grew to as much as 22 points.   An 18-5 Allen run midway through the second half dropped the deficit to nine points on Christian Stanley's layup to pull the Yellow Jackets closer at 72-63.  But that was as close as they would get as two Martin free throws push the lead back out to double figures were it would stay.

CAU hit nearly 52 percent of their shots on the day, with 13 made 3-pointers.

Martin finished with a game-high 26 points, hitting three 3-pointers, all seven of his free throws, grabbing three rebounds and making four assists.  Jalen Williams finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Shannon Smith hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and six assists.  Reed had 11 points, Javonte Sterling added nine points and seven boards, and Longstreet had eight points.

Stanley led Allen with 21 points, 18 rebounds and five assists.  Anthony Baker had 20 points and Darius Williams added 19.

The Panthers are back on the road Monday, but they will remain in Columbia, S.C. where they will face Benedict (15-5, 11-2 SIAC) at 7:30 p.m.
