Williams Leads CAU to 76-72 Win Over Edward Waters

Jalen Williams had 25 points as Clark Atlanta won their third game in a row in defeating Edward Waters 76-72 at L.S. Epps Gymnasium Saturday.

The Panthers (11-13, 5-10 SIAC) led the entire second half, but Edward Waters (15-11) was able to pull to within one point at 68-67 after Elias Harden hit a 3-pointer with 4:48 remaining. Williams countered with a layup and a free throw after he was fouled just over two minutes later that put CAU up 71-67.  

Edward Waters could not get closer than three points the rest of the way as Williams and Chris Martin hit free throws that put the game away.

It came after a first half in which Edward Waters led most of a tight first half.  The Tigers led by five – 23-18 – after Jasseim Obie hit two free throws with 8:38 left in the half.  But CAU went on a 14-2 run over the next three minutes, capped by a Shane Pearley jumper, to take a 32-25 lead – a lead that they held for the rest of the game.

CAU forced 21 turnovers that they converted to 22 points.  They also outrebounded Edward Waters 44-38.

Williams had 25 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal for CAU.  Martin came off the bench to score 17 points and grab a team-high eight rebounds.  He also had four assists and two steals.  Shannon Smith finished with nine points on three 3-pointers while Javonte Sterling had eight points and four rebounds.  Justin Longstreet finished with seven points, three rebounds and two steals.

Harden had 29 points for Edward Waters while Bryant Nolan Jr., had 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Panthers are back on the court Tuesday when they play their final home game of the season when they host Fort Valley State at approximately 8 p.m., after the Lady Panthers take on the Fort Valley State women at 6 p.m.
