A late second-half push was not enough as Clark Atlanta fell to Albany State 94-87 at L.S. Epps Gymnasium Monday.
The Panthers (6-7, 3-4 SIAC) saw their three-game winning streak – dotted with three postponed games during January – end as Albany State (7-13, 5-7 SIAC) won for the third time in their last five games.
CAU kept things close midway through the first half, with two
Jalen Williams free throws tying the game at 19-19. But Albany State went on a 7-0 run over the next minute to retake the lead at 26-19 with ten minutes left before halftime. The Golden Rams were able to push that lead out to nine points at halftime.
Albany State extended that lead to as many as 19 points early in the second half. CAU battled back, outscoring ASU 48-32 over the next 17 minutes to whittle that lead down to three points.
Chris Martin's layup made it 88-85 with 1;16 remaining.
The lead was still at three points when
Kye Jeremiah's free throws made it 90-87 with 46 seconds left. But the Panthers missed their final two baskets while ASU got a layup and two free throws from Malik Parker to take the victory.
Williams led five Panthers in double-figure scoring with 25 points, along with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Martin, the SIAC's leading scorer, had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jeremiah finished with 11 points and three rebounds, while
Rodney Simon his all five of his field goals and had 11 points and four rebounds.
Justin Longstreet added ten points.
Parker had 22 points for Albany State, as did Jordan Simpson who also a game-high 14 rebounds. Kendan Maddox had 13 points and 10 boards for ASU.
Clark Atlanta next takes on Savannah State on Wednesday, Jan. 26 in Savannah in a game that was to have been played on Jan. 7. CAU then returns home Saturday, Jan. 29 when they host surging Benedict College (13-4, 9-1 SIAC).
