Clark Atlanta Splits Doubleheader At Benedict Wednesday

Freshman Winston Noel had three hits and scored four runs over two games as the Clark Atlanta University Panthers split a doubleheader with Benedict College Wednesday.

The Panthers (3-8) end up winning two of three games against Benedict (4-4) this season.

In Game 1, CAU jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the third inning as Noel scored on a Daniel Gay RBI single in the first, Deandre Swift scored on a passed ball along with Jalen Mason driving in two runs in the second, and Swift singled in a run and Michael Fegins scored on a wild pitch in the third.

But Benedict struck back with two runs in the bottom of the third and then two more in the fourth, one on a homer by Myquerris McGrier.

Justice Page extended CAU's lead to 7-4 with a sacrifice fly that drove in Zye'Kee Pruitt in the top of the sixth.  Benedict's bats continued to hum in the bottom of the inning as they scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-7 lead.

CAU managed to score another run in the seventh – an RBI single by Darrin Brown that scored Gay – but that was all the Panthers could muster as they fell to Benedict 10-8.

Noel had two hits – one a triple - and scored a run, while Pruitt doubled and tripled and scored twice. Swift was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.  Anthony Johnson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Benedict.

In Game 2, CAU again jumped out to a big early lead, this time leading 10-0 after four innings.  But again Benedict clawed their way back into the game, scoring four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to trail 10-6.

The Panthers padded their lead to 12-6 after a Gay sacrifice fly drove in Eason Bing, and then Jerry (Tripp) Freeman scored on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.  Benedict pulled to within one as they scored five runs in the bottom of the inning.

The seventh saw Freeman double in Bing and Noel to extend CAU's lead to 14-11.  Page came in and picked up the save to preserve a CAU victory.  Fegins picked up the win for CAU, striking out eight over four innings.

Noel singled, stole two bases and scored three times for CAU.  Page doubled and singled while scoring a run and driving in a run. Zuri Dublin had three RBIs and scored a run while Herbert Dudley III had three hits, drove in two runs and scored once.

Ryan Chesney doubled and homered in going 3-for-4 for Benedict.  He drove in four runs.

Friday, it will be Senior Day – honoring Panther senior Joshua Oliver - as Clark Atlanta hosts Morris College in a doubleheader at Bill Evans Field in College Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
