On a day when the Clark Atlanta University Panthers defense forced three turnovers and blocked a field goal, the CAU offense couldn't get on track as the Panthers fell at Tuskegee 21-0 Saturday.
The Clark Atlanta (1-4, 0-2 SIAC) defense was stout, particularly in the first half when Tuskegee (2-3, 1-0 SIAC) only could muster a late second quarter touchdown on their longest drive of the half. TU's Bryson Williams threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Latrevien O'Neal with 43 seconds left in the half.
The Panther defense only gave up 51 yards of passing and 47 rushing yards to the Golden Tigers in the first half. It was a half in which Clark Atlanta's
Zye'Kee Pruitt picked off a Williams pass late in the first quarter, returning it 28 yards to midfield. On CAU's ensuing drive,
Elijah Odom drove the Panthers to the Tuskegee 35.
Fernando Lobo came on to attempt a 52-yard field goal for CAU, but the kick was wide left.
Just before the first half ended, Lobo had a 40-yard punt that was caught by Tuskegee's Devarens Valcin. But Valcin fumbled and it was recovered by CAU's
Ronnie West at the Tuskegee 28-yard line with ten seconds left before halftime.
After Odom couldn't complete a pass to
Drakar Jerry, Lobo attempted a 45-yard field goal that he missed to the right, ending the half.
Beginning the third quarter, CAU couldn't move the ball and were forced to punt. On their next drive, Tuskegee saw Williams complete a 9-yard pass to O'Neal, but CAU's
Camron Ivey forced O'Neal to fumble and recovered the ball at the CAU 43-yard line.
CAU took over the ball, but after a
Jeremiah Gibbs 4-yard run, Odom was intercepted on the next play by Tuskegee's Kobi Mitchell who returned it 55 yards for a Golden Tigers touchdown, giving them a 14-0 lead.
On the first series of the fourth quarter, Tuskegee drove 84 yards in seven plays, culminated by a 31-yard Williams touchdown run to go up 21-0. CAU took over on offense, but Odom threw an interception to Tuskegee's Carl Matthews at the Tuskegee 33-yard line.
Neither team could move the ball on their ensuing possessions. Tuskegee managed to get the ball down to the Clark Atlanta 33-yard line midway through the quarter, but their field goal attempt was blocked and recovered by CAU's
Trey Wilson. But the CAU offense couldn't get going and then Tuskegee salted the game away for the win.
The Clark Atlanta defense was led by
Jordan Johnson who had nine tackles, six of them solo.
Julian Little made seven stops and had two pass break-ups.
Rodney Lewis and
Tyrese Ross each had five tackles, while Pruitt had two tackles and a pass break-up to go with his interception.
Offensively, Odom had a tough day, throwing three interceptions and getting sacked three times. But he was 18-of-33 passing for 128 yards, seven of his completions going to Jerry who had seven catches for 51 yards. Gibbs finished with 20 yards rushing.
Darren Stephens had one run for 26 yards.
Williams threw for 105 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 46 yards and another touchdown. Ivonte Patterson led Tuskegee with 148 yards rushing on 25 carries.
The Panthers return to CAU Panther Stadium next Saturday when they host Allen University at 2 p.m.
