Clark Atlanta Falls to Lane 68-52 In SIAC Tournament Monday

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers couldn't overcome a tough shooting day as they fell to Lane 68-52 in the first round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Monday in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Lady Panthers finish the season 8-19 overall, 6-11 SIAC play.

Clark Atlanta went into the game as the fourth seed from the SIAC East Division while Lane (9-16, 8-10 SIAC) was the fifth seed from the West.  CAU had defeated Lane in two overtimes back in early December.

But Monday, the Lady Panthers only managed to hit 24 percent of their shots and only one 3-pointer.   They also turned the ball over 27 times and had only four assists.

The first half was close as neither team could get much offense going.  CAU only had five baskets while Lane had 11.  Lane opened up a seven-point lead on a 3-pointer by Briana Thompson which made it 18-11 with 7:43 left before halftime.  But over the next five minutes, Autum Morings came into the game and had seven points during CAU's 9-2 run that gave Clark Atlanta a 22-20 lead with 2:43 left before the break.  But another CAU scoring drought hit over the rest of the quarter, with Lane outscoring the Lady Panthers 7-1 to take a 27-23 lead at halftime.

The Lady Panthers then went nearly seven minutes into the third quarter before scoring a field goal – a Courtney Hall tip-in with 3:23 left in the third to make it 37-29 in favor of Lane.  CAU only had two field goals in the quarter, but hit ten free throws.  Lane ended the quarter leading by six, 43-37.

Reyana Miller's jumper early in the fourth quarter pulled CAU to within four at 43-39 and were only down by six after Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell's basket with 6:32 remaining made it 51-45. But Lane outscored CAU 11-0 over the next 3:42 to put the game away late.

Miller, one of five CAU seniors playing their final game in a Lady Panther uniform, led Clark Atlanta with ten points along with two rebounds and an assist.  Morings finished with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Mitchell had eight points, seven rebounds and an assist, while Naomi Holloway had seven points and six rebounds.  Courtney Hall added six points and seven boards.  Jalisa Jones and Jazmin Smith each had five points, with Jones adding four rebounds.

Briana Thompson led Lane with 21 points, while Alexis Harris added 15 points and nine rebounds and Ra'Keta Shelton finished with 11 points and ten rebounds.

Lane moves on to the second round on Wednesday when they play Miles, the No. 1 seed from the West Division, at 1 p.m.
