Clark Atlanta ended their four-game losing streak with a 77-54 victory over Paine Monday at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
The win solidified the Panthers (8-13, 8-5 SIAC) hold on second place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division race. They are a game ahead of Morehouse and two games behind first-place Albany State. CAU hosts Morehouse on Feb. 15 and Albany State on Feb. 17. Paine fell to 2-17 overall, 2-12 in conference play.
Monday the Panthers briefly trailed early with Paine going up 11-6 on a Keon Williams 3-pointer midway through the first half. Justin Longstreet then hit back-to-back 3-pointers that put the Panthers up 12-11. Three
Andrew Stewart free throws capped a 10-0 CAU run that put the Panthers up 17-11 with 7:02 left before halftime.
Over the next four minutes, Paine rallied with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game at 17-17 with three minutes left in the half. But over the next three minutes, two
Tyler Singleton 3-pointers book-ended a 12-2 CAU run that put Clark Atlanta ahead 27-19 at the half.
Three-pointers by
Shannon Smith, Longstreet and
Romaine Thomas to open the second half was enough to build a comfortable, double-digit lead that grew to as many as 28 points as Clark Atlanta earned the win.
Clark Atlanta forced 22 turnovers, converting them to 26 points. They also only allowed Paine to get four fast break points and won the rebounding battle 41-33.
Singleton led Clark Atlanta with 14 points while grabbing three rebounds and handing out three assists. Thomas had nine points and ten rebounds, while Longstreet also finished with nine points.
Colin Bell and
Javonte Sterling each had seven points and three rebounds.
Andrew Stewart had eight points and three assists.
Jamal Hinkle led Paine with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Bryce Latimer added 14 points.
The Panthers are off until next Saturday at 4 p.m. when they again play Paine in Augusta. They then host Benedict on Monday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m.
