Ayrton Gijsbertha walk off fly ball that was dropped by a Paine outfielder allowed
Anthony Nettles to score and lift Clark Atlanta to an 8-7 walk-off victory over Paine Sunday at Bill Evans Field in College Park, Ga. The win completed a four-game series sweep of the Lions this weekend.
Clark Atlanta (8-17, 5-7 SIAC) had gone into the series this weekend having lost seven in a row.
Saturday, the Panthers opened the series having to come from behind early as Paine (9-15-1, 0-8 SIAC) jumped ahead in the first inning with four runs on a beautiful, warm day. The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the first when Jordan Howell singled and scored.
Jamari Stewart and
Ceontae Brandon singled in runs in the second to pull CAU closer at 4-3. Paine countered with two runs in the third and a third in the fourth to go up 7-3.
But that's all the Panthers would allow in the game. Stewart,
Jordan Johnson and
Calvin Butler each got on and scored in the fourth to pull to within one. Butler and then singled and scored, followed by
Jason Howell doing the same and providing what proved to be the winning run during the four-run sixth to put the game away and gave them a 10-7 win.
In the second game Saturday, Paine broke open a scoreless game with a run in the top of the fifth. Clark Atlanta then took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with four runs as Brandon, Gijsbertha, Butler, and Howell each singled and scored to lead CAU to a 5-3 win.
Sunday on an afternoon that was cloudy and chilly, CAU did all their damage early, getting six runs in the first inning of the top end of the doubleheader to cruise to a 7-4 victory.
In the nightcap, Clark Atlanta led 7-3 heading into the top of the seventh when Paine had five singles and scored four runs to the tie the game at 7-7.
But in the bottom of the seventh, Stewart drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Nettles. Nettles moved to second on a walk to Butler. Nettles then moved to third on a passed ball while Gijsbertha was at the plate. Gijisbetha then drove a pitch just short of the left field fence, but then it was dropped, allowing Nettles to trot in for the winning run.
Brandon had two hits and scored twice for CAU.
The Panthers are back on the diamond next weekend when they visit Benedict College for two games on April 6.
