Late Rally Falls Short As Clark Atlanta Loses to No. 14 Morehouse 70-67

Despite a bad shooting day, Clark Atlanta came up one shot short of forcing overtime as the Panthers fell to 14th ranked Morehouse 70-67 Saturday at Morehouse's Franklin Forbes Arena.

After trailing by 14 points with just over four minutes left to play, Clark Atlanta (11-11, 8-7 SIAC) was able to whittle the lead down to one after outscoring Morehouse (18-3, 12-3 SIAC) 20-7 over the next three minutes and 19 seconds.

The Panthers' senior trio of Shelvick Henry, Jalen Mitchell and Austin Donaldson combined for 14 points during that stretch, followed by two Romaine Thomas free throws and his lay-in with 13 seconds remaining to pull the Panthers to 68-67.

Without any timeouts left, Clark Atlanta was forced to foul and put Morheouse on the free throw line at the end.  The strategy nearly worked as Morehouse's Chibueze Ebinum hit one-of-two free throws with ten seconds remaining and then Robert Andrews hit one with seconds left to put Morehouse up 70-67.  Ebinum then missed a free throw to give CAU one last chance to tie.

Mitchell took the rebound and streaked up court, taking a 3-pointer that hit the backboard and then the front of the rim before rolling off, persevering the win for the Maroon Tigers. Morehouse clinched the SIAC East Division title with the win.

The furious run late in the second half by CAU was much different from a first half in which the Panthers hit only five shots and was only 19 percent from the field.  Morehouse, the SIAC's second-best scoring offense and top field goal percentage team, only hit 37 percent of their own shots as CAU only trailed 28-24 at the break.

Shelvick Henry, who had 27 points in CAU's win over Morehouse two weeks ago, finished with 17 points to lead the Panthers Saturday.  Thomas had 13 points and 13 rebounds while Mitchell added 12 points and seven boards. Shannon Smith had eight points while Donaldson finished with six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Omar Alston led Morehouse with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Clark Atlanta returns home for their final two games of the regular season, Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. on Senior Day when they host Benedict College and Monday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. when they host Paine College.
