Barry University outscored Clark Atlanta 15-6 over the last four minutes of the second half to pull away for a 75-67 victory over CAU in the season-opener for both teams Saturday in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
Clark Atlanta (0-1) had led most of the second half, the final time after a layup by
Ian Roach gave CAU a 61-60 lead with 4:12 left in a close game.
Barry (1-0) then got baskets from Justinas Marcinkevicius, David Moya, and a 3-pointer by Marcelo Perez to take a 67-61 lead with 3:12 left in the game. Â CAU's
Andrew Stewart countered with a layup and then got two free throws from
Tyler Singleton to close to within two at 67-65 with 2:11 remaining.
But the Panthers could only manage one basket – a
Traylen Warren layup with 21 seconds left that made it 71-64 – over the final two minutes of the game. Barry got a dunk from Tylan Birts, CAU missed three straight shots, and then Perez got another layup for Barry that put the game away.
It was a big turnaround for Barry as the Panthers held them to just 29 percent shooting in a first half that Clark Atlanta led most of the way.
Romaine Thomas led Clark Atlanta with 13 points and 13 rebounds, along with three blocks and a steal. Roach finished with 11 points, while Warren had ten.Â
Justin Longstreet and Singleton each had nine points for CAU.
Jake Kakar led Barry with 25 points, connecting on five 3-pointers and also grabbing seven rebounds and getting three steals.
The Panthers will quickly be back on the court at L.S. Epps Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 11 when they host Palm Beach Atlantic University at 7 p.m.
