Three Lady Panthers finished with double-digit kills as Clark Atlanta closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Savannah State Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers (6-15, 5-12 SIAC) finish the season just behind Savannah State (8-15, 6-10 SIAC) in the SIAC East Division standings, just one slot out of being able to qualify for the upcoming Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C.
The top four teams in the East and West divisions qualify for the tournament. CAU finished fifth behind fourth-place Savannah State.
Tuesday, CAU took the first set after seizing the lead in a close match on consecutive service aces by
Lauryn Terry to go up 18-16. Savanah State kept the set close, but CAU led the rest of the way, winning 25-23 on
Taylor Prude's kill.
Savannah State came back and won a back-and-forth second set by winning the final two points of the set to win it 25-23.
The Lady Panthers led by as many as 13 points in the third set to win that frame 25-14. In fhe fourth set, Savannah State whittled down a six-point CAU lead to two on Valeria Aldarondo's kill that made it 19-17. But CAU won six of the next eight points, including the set-winner on
Taylor Prude's kill, to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
The victory avenges CAU's 3-1 loss at home to Savannah State on Oct. 15 at L.S. Epps Gymnasium. CAU finishes the season by winning their final two matches.
Terry led the Lady Panthers with 13 kills and six aces, while
Kia Thomas had 11 kills, three aces and two digs. Prude had ten kills, ten digs and three assists.
Chara Robbins had 35 assists, along with five digs, two aces and a block.
TiAna Crider had nine digs, four assists.
Imani Williamson led Savannah State with 12 kills, two aces, two assists and eight digs.
