Box Score 3 Calvin Butler and
Antonio Watts got hits in two of three games this past weekend, but the Clark Atlanta University Panthers were swept in their three-game series with Albany State University Friday and Saturday at Bill Evans Field in College Park, Ga.
The Panthers (8-18, 1-8 SIAC) kept close things close at 1-1 through the first four innings of Friday's game. But Albany State (14-13, 6-3 SIAC) got four runs in the fifth and ten runs in the sixth to take the first game 15-1. ASU's Roman Oliu struck out seven and allowed just three hits, two of the them to Watts who went 2-for-4.Â
Jamari Randle drove in Watts for the Panthers only run of the day.
CAU was looking to grab a come-from-behind win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Panthers were down 3-0 I the fifth when
McKaleb Harlemon's sacrifice drove in
Shahir Gates, and then Watts scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth to pull the Panthers within one at 3-2. But that's as close as CAU would get as Albany State added another run in the seventh to hold off Clark Atlanta 4-2.
Anthony Nettles pitched a strong seven innings, striking out seven Golden Rams and giving up just six hits. CAU got hits from Gates,
Raphael Andrades, and Butler. Â ASU's Michael Reddick threw a 3-hitter, and also struck out seven.
Albany State had the hot bats in the series' final game, getting runs in every inning and hitting four home runs to win 16-1. Clark Atlanta's Deontae Brandon, Harlemon, Butler, Randle,
Cedric Garrett, and Gates and
Tahriq Wright all got hits for CAU, with Garrett driving in the Panthers' only run.
Clark Atlanta steps out of conference to visit Shorter University Tuesday, April 3 at 2 p.m. in Rome, Ga., before heading to Columbia, S.C., next weekend for a three-game series with Benedict College. The Panthers next home games will be April 21 and 22 when then host Atlanta University Center rival Morehouse College at Bill Evans Field.
