Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell had 20 points, but Clark Atlanta lost a close game 66-61 in a non-conference game on the road at the University of West Georgia Wednesday.
The Lady Panthers (1-11, 0-4 SIAC) had been down to West Georgia (6-3) by as many as 11 points in the first half. But a 13-8 run over the last nine minutes of the half, culminated by a Mitchell jumper, pulled CAU back into the game at 29-23 going into the third quarter.
West Georgia was able to get the lead back up to 14 late in the third quarter. But
LaJoyous Boose had six points and four rebounds to lead another CAU rally to pull to within six – 47-41 – as the third quarter ended.
The Lady Panthers kept things close the rest of the way. I'Nayiah Moore's free throw with 7:17 remaining tied the game at 49-49. Mitchell 3-pointer tied things again at 56-56 with 5:02 remaining.
West Georgia eked out a four-point lead, but CAU stayed within striking distance, with
Jalisa Jones' layup pulling them to one at 60-59 with 2:15 left. But the Lady Panthers could only score two more points the rest of the way as West Georgia held off CAU for the win.
Mitchell finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and hit three 3-pointers to lead CAU. Boose had a season-high 14 points, along with seven rebounds, while Moore had five points and nine boards.
Reyana Miller had nine points, three rebounds and an assist; Jones scored seven points, grabbed five boards and had two assists; and
Reagan Jackson had six points, four rebounds and two assists.
The Lady Panthers out-rebounded West Georgia 42-39.
West Georgia was led by Aysha Harris and Jessica Brown, both of them scoring 15 points.
The Lady Panthers are now off for the Christmas break. They return to the floor at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31 when they return to L.S. Epps Gymnasium and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action when they host Spring Hill College.
