Shelvick Henry scored 29 points while
Romaine Thomas added 28, but the Clark Atlanta University Panthers fell on the road to Kentucky State University 91-88 Monday.
The loss halted the Panthers' (4-7, 1-3 SIAC) three-game win streak, while the win ended Kentucky State's (5-7, 3-3 SIAC) losing streak.
CAU fell behind early in the first half, but went on a 20-13 run to grab their biggest lead of the game at 34-25 with 2:47 left before halftime. Clark Atlanta led at halftime 37-33.
Both teams turned up the offense in the second half, combining for 109 points. Kentucky State was particularly hot, hitting 65 percent of their shots in the second half alone.
The Thorobreds took the lead at the 17:41 mark, but the teams stayed within striking distance of each other for the next 11 minutes.
Henry's 3-pointer tied the game at 55-55, and then his two free throws gave CAU a 59-58 lead with 11:07 left. Henry's layup with 9:37 left gave CAU their final lead at 63-62.
CAU kept things close, trailing only by one – 68-67 – after Thomas' jumper with 6:34 remaining in the game. But KSU went on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach.
Henry and Thomas both had big second halves. Henry scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half, while Thomas 19 of his 28 in the final period. Henry finished with 29 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Thomas had a double-double with 28 points, ten rebounds, a block and an assist.
Jalen Mitchell added his own double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while also dishing four assists.
Ditalion Battle had a triple-double for Kentucky State, scoring 26 points, grabbing ten rebounds and making ten assists.
The Panthers are now off until Dec. 31 when they host Spring Hill College at 3 p.m. at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
