Jamila Mitchell Scores 14, But Clark Atlanta Loses to Miles 67-58

Jamila Mitchell had 14 points as the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers led most of the way but lost to Miles 67-58 Saturday in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

The Lady Panthers (0-6, 0-1 SIAC) led deep into the third quarter before Miles (4-1. 1-0 SIAC) went ahead as CAU suffered through a second half shooting slump in which they hit only 18 percent of their shots.

"We let one get away," said CAU Head Coach Yolanda Moore.  "When we had them down where we wanted them, we didn't execute.  We made bad decisions on both sides of the basketball. Miles kept fighting, they kept pushing the ball, they kept playing hard and they competed from start to finish, even when we had them down by ten.  They never stopped competing.

"But when we got up, we didn't keep the pressure on. But that's something they've got to learn," Moore said.  "I can't keep saying we're a young team because we're six games in now, but we just have to keep teaching what we want to do and hopefully in the game we'll find the positives and build on that."

The Lady Panthers jumped out to an 8-point lead by the end of the first quarter after Mitchell's 3-pointer gave them 20-12 lead.   That lead grew to ten midway through the second quarter after two I'Nayah Moore free throws made it 33-23.   But Miles ended the half on a 13-5 run to pull to within two – 38-36 – at halftime.

The Lady Golden Bears tied the game at 43-43 with 5:29 left on Sakina Wynn's jumper.  Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell countered with a basket that gave CAU the lead again at 45-43.  But that was the final time CAU would be ahead.   Miles scored nine of the next 11 points in the quarter to take a 52-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

CAU got within two twice in the fourth quarter, the last time after two Reagan Jackson free throws made it 56-54 with 3:47 remaining.  But Miles held off the Lady Panthers, pushing the lead out to nine to get the win.

Mitchell had 14 points and six rebounds for CAU, while Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell finished with nine points, six rebounds and an assist. Moore – who also had a team-high nine rebounds – Reyana Miller, and Jalisa Jones all finished with eight points for the Lady Panthers. Jones also had eight rebounds.

Taylor Terry led Miles with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Next up for the Lady Panthers will be Tuskegee on Monday night at 6 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

And while the Lady Panthers are 0-6 with a team that returned only two players from last season's SIAC championship squad, CAU has steadily gotten better, particularly in the past two games in which they pushed hard against Lee – a 24-win NCAA tourney team last year – and was in position to grab the win against Miles Saturday.

"They just have to learn how to compete for 40 minutes," Moore said.  "And just being smarter with the basketball in situations.  That's something that we've got to get better at.  But I am pleased. We did play a lot better than we have played.

"These are conference games, so it's imperative that we get it together," Moore said.  "But we'll go in, we'll practice, watch film, see where the adjustments need to be made and we'll come out Monday and hopefully do well."
