Lady Panthers Advance to the Conference Championship Tournament

Box Score Atlanta, Ga.---It took four consecutive conference wins and a colossal team effort for the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers to advance to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament as they downed Albany State University in a five-set thriller (25-12, 13-25, 22-25, 25-21, 18-16) Friday at Epps Gymnasium.

The Lady Panthers (9-23, SIAC 9-8) cruised to the opening set win with 13 kills compared to 7 by Albany State, but found themselves down two sets to one after three. A much better collaborative effort and determination ensued in the fourth set as CAU forced a decisive five set. The fifth set provided three ties and four lead changes after Clark Atlanta had the first opportunity to seal the win with set point at 14-13. Albany State answered with two consecutive points that gave the Lady Rams a 15-14 advantage, but CAU roared back with three unanswered points for the win and another chance for its second championship title in three years.

Sophomore Sierra Scoggins smacked a season-high 16 kills on 32 attempts with only two errors while Cori Smith and senior Alexandria Mattox finished with nine and eight kills, respectively to lead the Lady Panthers.

In the first round of the SIAC championship tournament, which will be held Nov. 10-12, at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, the East Division's four-seeded Lady Panthers will face the West Division leader Kentucky State University Monday, Nov. 10
