Lady Panthers' Softball Splits Opening Day Matchups at Valkyries Classic

Softball starts the season 1-1 overall

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers' softball team opened the season 1-1 after dropping the opening contest to Converse University before taking down Mars Hill on Friday afternoon at the Valkyries Classic hosted by Converse.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE (CONVERSE 9, CLARK ATLANTA 8)

Clark Atlanta bolted out to an early 5-0 lead behind a single from Daria Bush, a double from Lena Sellam, and a single from Summer Castro to bring in five runs combined at the top of the first inning. Converse battled back with a trio of runs to cut the margin to 5-3 in the second. Castro notched an RBI-double in the fourth to score Sellam, followed by a single from Sydney Strickland, in which Castro scored on a throwing error, mounting the Lady Panthers lead to 8-3. The Valkyries battled back, scoring six unanswered runs to complete the comeback and win 9–8 over Clark Atlanta.

GAME TWO (CLARK ATLANTA 10, MARS HILL  9)

The Lady Panthers started the game off hot once again with Lena Sellam belting the first hit of the game to score Makayla Marquez, followed by Jadin Broadnax's single to score Sellam and give CAU a 2-0 advantage. Mars Hill responded by knotting the score at two-all in their next at-bat. However, the Lady Panthers were determined as they scored four runs over the next three innings while only allowing one to take a commanding 6-3 lead over Mars Hill in the top of the fourth. Mars Hill responded with a similar scoring run of their own as they tied the game at seven runs apiece in the sixth frame. The Lady Panthers were able to outlast Mars Hill 10-9 to secure their first victory of the season
